X.2628b. SPRINGING ON 40/50 CHASSIS.

We have carried out a number of tests comparing the oil type thin leaf springs with the present thick leaf springs. For these tests we have used two cars both fitted with covered bodies. The tyres on each car were identical as regards manufacture and pressures. We arranged so that the cars were identical as regards weight. The conditions of the springs both the thick leaf and the thin leaf were identical i.e. the leaves were greased. No shock absorbers were fitted to either car at the rear. After we had carried out a test over all conditions of road with both cars, we changed the springs over from one car to the other. We then carried out the same test on the same road. We then changed the springs back again. We afterwards changed them from one car to the other again and carried out another test. From the conditions of road over which we tested these cars, the results of these tests show that it is impossible to tell on either car which springs are fitted. There were differences in the riding of each car but the difference remained with the car with either type of springs. We attribute these differences to the position of the seats and the conditions of the cushions and upholstery.
