Before Xmas I worked at the drawings for the side brake and change speed levers for the above chassis. These have now been tested, and the action of the change speed lever proved to be slightly imperfect owing to adopting controlling grooves which are too deep etc. (These deep ones were only to be used if the shallow ones shewn on the drawing were found to have insufficient control.) By our drawing it appears that if the controlling groove is a little too deep there may be danger of locking the slider, (especially should the groove turning tool be parallel sided.) I think therefore these grooves should in all cases be slightly less in width than the plunger diameters, and be made with a tool which is no less in width than the plunger diameter, so as to guard against the possibility of anything but a smooth entrance and exit of the plunger relative to groove.

From Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence I also sent an improved arrangement of the bearings of the change speed lever so as to slide sideways more easily. It is now 6 months and this work has not been corrected. Will you kindly see that it is pushed forward? It will be noticed that no plungers or grooves are really needed for the reverse as the toggle motion is self locking when in gear, and locked out.

I am very anxious to get these levers on any, or all the chassis which are coming round, so that the underframe, which seems so advantageous to the body question, can contd :-
