ROYAL AIRCRAFT ESTABLISHMENT REPORT NO. E.1861.

SUBJECT
Martin Petrol Pump

SUMMARY

Further tests on the Martin Petrol Pump which was reported on in January 1918 (Report No. E.1142) were carried out to determine the endurance of the diaphragm and for comparison with the Zenith and Lanchester Pumps with particular reference to its action when feeding direct to the carburetter.

The pump tested was the same type as that reported on in E.1142 but of a slightly modified design, lighter and more compact than the original. A new pattern which has not yet been tested is illustrated in Drawing M.870.

1. DESCRIPTION.

Drawing No. E.538 shows the type of pump tested. The drive in this case was by flexible shaft, but in the improved type the drive can be direct from the engine or by windmill.

The multiple diaphragm is actuated on the suction stroke by a cam revolving at 1/12 the speed of the drive shaft. On the discharge stroke the diaphragm is actuated by a spring, which can be adjusted for a wide range of discharge pressures.

A handle for hand operation is incorporated in the design of the improved type pump.
