To EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} for EH. 2/8/16 COPY. R1/W29716. 31/7/16. RE CLAUDEL FOR BUGATTI. With reference to the carburetter for the Bugatti, will you kindly arrange for this to be carefully packed and sent here. We will try and get a local garage to fit it on. Ask them to send with it the usual spare nozzles, so that we can try which suits the engine best. It will not be necessary for them to send anyone until we have done what we can to get it going. Should this carburetter prove inferior to the Zenith which is at present on the car we will ask Messrs Hobson's to send someone to see it. The engine misses fire at certain slow speed full throttle with the Zenith even when the gravity jet is fully weak, we think this is due to bad distribution although hot air is supplied and the weather very warm, this supports experience with Zenith on aero engines. I propose having new induction pipe made for this engine symmetrical in shape with hot water jacket at junction. R-R carburetters are angels compared with any of these so far, we are also altering throttle control so that engine can be run with throttle really closed and engine as brake, as it appears that all these carburetters, the stop on the throttle is set permanently which is bad, making starting difficult with repeated stops and when hot engine runs too fast.
