X.4079 - BENCH TESTS ON GOSHAWK IGNITION COIL CASES.

Please find attached copy of my assistant's report on details of various bench tests which were made on the Goshawk ignition coil cases, some of the results of which have been referred to in our EFC1/T9.11.22.

Even now we have not yet built coils which are entirely free from fault reported, at any rate when bolted down to the engine with holding down bolts in the usual manner. We intend, however, making experiments on insulating the coil cases from the metal of the engine with mica sleeves and washers. Another experiment we have in hand is to attempt to insulate the inserts of the coil case by means of a layer of rubber compound applied to these before moulding. X4079a We are also making up a coil with four layer primary of reduced gauge, getting in 320 turns and enabling the secondary to start in a much smaller diameter. To get on the turns, the coil has also to be slightly longer which can be allowed for in the coil case moulding.

Further to that we shall await the design referred to in your R1/M11.11.22.
