'SS{S. Smith}' ENGINE - DYNAMO PINION BUSH LUBRICATION.

We have a recurrence on the second 'SS{S. Smith}' engine of the seizing trouble through inadequate lubrication of the dynamo pinion bush. On the first engine after we had modified the oil scoop and fitted spiral grooves to the bronze bush we had no further signs of the trouble but on this second engine although fitted with the same scheme, we had seizure of the shaft on the bush after 2 hrs. running.

The only difference we were able to observe was in the oil scoop. This particular one had the trough curled round more than the original which caused a more restricted entry for the oil splash and secondly the feeding end came closer to the crankcase wall.

The chances of efficient splash lubrication seem to be somewhat impaired by the fact that the oil splash from the gears is thrown outwards towards the wheelcase due to the angle of the gear helix. This we have observed when running without the wheelcase.

The fact that this trouble has occurred on two engines and also that trouble has occurred with the vacuum pump eccentric, makes us somewhat sceptical as to the reliability of this means of lubrication.

We have a low pressure feed to the vacuum pump piston and suggest that we could carry this along to the dynamo
