48830 BY BJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET RL/M27.2.28. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. c. to Fl. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} X.1906 X.4649 X.3804 X.8830 X.7770 X.7830 With reference to the Prince's visit I am sorry my telegram got wrong, but the result was alright. I under-stand you used the smart looking Barker sports (Continental). The items about the aero engines sounded good. REGARDING AERO ENGINES' NAME. X.1906 X.3804 I agree that 'Rolls-Royce F.10' etc. is the best we can do. Dropping the name was an idea of mine to get the papers to mention 'Rolls-Royce'. It is now agreed that it was a good thing, but I had some doubts, and missed having the name. Perhaps each separate variety of Fs.{F. Steele} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will soon have a code word printed in the book which describes them, so that this code word, in one word, will say which one we refer to. Keep the letter and number after the 'Rolls-Royce', or 'RR', or it looks like an initial of Francis Rolls. REGARDING NAME OF EAC.10 CHASSIS. X.7770 I agree that Super Sports suits me. Abbreviated 'SS{S. Smith}' is excellent. Phantom 2, was your, and HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' suggestion, I only mentioned it in agreement. It can be used when you tell us it is convenient. REGARDING SCHEIDER TROPHY RACE. X.4649 I agree with yours. I wanted to stick up for equal chances in the race if we get forward enough to be put in at all - i.e. say 2 of ours and 2 of Napiers, not their 3 chances to our 1. I agree it is too early to say anything about it, but not too early to realise the situation. REGARDING THE SPORTS BODY. X.8830 X.7830 I wanted to convey to all that the sports car was involved in 2 items, (telegraphic eror read 400, ITEMS). (1) Chassis improvements. (2) A special stream line speed body, (called 'Continental' in lieu of a better name. I still do not like this name). (1) should come in to all Phantom chassis as soon as ever possible, even at some scrap. (2) can be used any time in present standard Phantom or with improvements under heading (1).
