Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. X3499 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}11/H11.1.23. re. Thermostat Control Radiator Shutters. Springfield point out that they have a number of Sylphon Tubes which were recently obtained for use in the present standard thermostat on the 40/50 engine water circulation, which is not used on the Springfield made cars. If these tubes are of any use to us in connection with the anticipated thermostat control shutters, they would be pleased to dispose of them. There does not yet appear to be in America any really satisfactory thermostat control radiator shutter. At the same time, the question of using shutters for cars, especially during the winter is now almost universal, but the biggest percentage of them are hand-controlled. The majority of R.R. cars supplied are fitted with hand-controlled radiator shutters, horizontal type, (known as the Davis type). The only type of thermostat control shutter which seems to be used is the "Winterfront", particulars of which I attach. This they point out, however, is not successful as so far as automatic control is concerned, but has the advantage that the shutters can be properly closed by hand when the car is standing and will automatically open themselves when the car is put in use.
