EFCl/T6.10.24. ORIGINAL CONNECTING ROD DYNAMICS. PART I. BALANCING. (1) Whereas the balancing of the purely reciprocating and of the purely revolving parts of engines, inclusive of the respective contributions of the connecting rod thereto, is relatively easily understood, the whole balancing of the connecting rod inclusive of trans-verse couple effects is more involved. (2) An exact and at the same time clear statement of the case has notbeen seen. This is an attempt to give such a statement, for instance, one which is not too mathematically involved for the truths contained therein to be hidden behind mathematical symbols, and at the same time one which is not so shorn of exactness as to make it merely an approximate physical explanation. In other words, it is hoped to be the required compromise, readily intelligible without advanced mathematics. (3) There is a principle in the dynamics of a rigid body, viz:- "The Principle of the Independence of Translation and Rotation" This states that in the case of a rigid body in motion under the action of a system of forces :- Contd. | ||
