X.3526 - R.R. EXPERIMENTAL DYNAMOTOR 40/50 H.P. CHASSIS MADE FROM STARTER MOTOR PARTS. X.1640

It is decided that we build up experimentally one or two dynamos made from R.R. present standard starter motor parts, using the same carcase, pole pieces, bearings and brush system, but making the necessary modifications to the end plate at the driving end to suit a pulley for belt drive in place of the epicyclic gear.

Mr. Royce wishes to try, in the first instance, two types of armature as follows :-

(1) This armature will be cut with 37 slots, the width of which we estimate will be .130" and the depth about .480 but as much less as possible, giving a width of iron at root of tooth of .100". The armature to be wound with 592 conductors made up of 37 sections of 8 turns per section and arranged in the slots in the manner diagrammatically indicated on separate sheet. It is desired to use No.19 S.W.G. D.C.C. wire and it is estimated that this will be able to be got in the slot with the necessary insulation.

(2) The winding will be a simple 4 pole progressive wave winding having a step of 1 to 10. It will be necessary to detail out a new commutator with 37 segments to suit this armature.
