To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. CJ. RG.{Mr Rowledge} c. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Mr. Claremont. X 3949 SECRET RL/M3.4.24. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. X.3949. X.9780. X.9040. COMBINED MAGNETO & BATTERY IGNITION AUTOMATIC ADVANCE. (R.R. HYDRAULIC RELAY). I have done some work on this and from my drawing I find the following, which I describe in the following sketches:- [Diagram annotations, left side, top to bottom] A cross arm governor perhaps distinctly larger than that for battery ignition, but otherwise the same. Sliding box that cannot turn. Lubricating oil pressure. 2 1/4" dia. cyl. 4" long. fitted with double trunk piston having hat leathers as shewn. Oil pressure admitted between piston try- ing to get through sleeve of trunk which is perforated in the centre but covered by valve (central collar). See next sketch. [Diagram annotations, right side, top to bottom] Connecting links to collar. Having a stroke of .9 to 1.1 Cross pin & slot. Driving worm. Inner sliding & revolving spindle. Very small dia. thrust (double). 3/4" dia. 5 collars. Central valve (hollow) having .1 movement up & down in piston. Exhaust drain to crankchamber. (1) | ||
