X4086 Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} (Laval) From EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} EF1/LG/19.4.22. X429 X4086 We have received your telegram - to which we have replied as follows:- "HALDENBY - HAVE ARRANGED TOM MADDOCKS FOR ADDITIONAL DRIVER LEAVING WEDNESDAY - PLATFORD". We have also received note from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} dated 12th.(perhaps) I take it that you have now been over the ground as regards the brakes on 5-Goshawk-11 as compared with 4-Goshawk-11. Waldron reports that the brakes are still bad and inconsistent and is talking about taking up the internal toggle adjustment. This we consider, rather shows that the liners require replacing. We hope to receive further information about this point when you have tried and inspected 4-Goshawk-11. I have arranged with Hancock to make a test on the G.II brakes by pouring water on with the back wheels revolving as suggested by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Personally, I have a feeling that the water getting into the brakes on the 40/50, improves them as shewn by the experience that we have had by the varying complaints from customers, especially including those from FN. with reference to his Trials Cars. When the car has been in use for some time, running over dry roads and in a dry atmosphere, he complains that the brakes become less effective, but if he experiences a bad spell of weather, the brakes become quite effective. We are anxious to hear from you, Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} and R.{Sir Henry Royce} your opinion on 5-Goshawk-11 and whether the rattle we were rather concerned about has disappeared or whether it was considered of any consequence. We have heard from Bullamore that he is remaining with R.{Sir Henry Royce} with 4-Goshawk-11 until the 29th. inst. and is bringing 4-Goshawk-11 back to Derby. I have received Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} memo. this morning of Tuesday (10th.?) for which I thank you. I certainly thought from the various expressions of opinion that it was your intention to have some settlement as to what is to be the production chassis, not so much to deal with the question of complaints but to deal with the actual faults which you and R.{Sir Henry Royce} are confident have taken place on the cars now being run, and as we consider here that this is the cognizant feature so far as the progress of the Goshawk job is concerned, I am anxious that you should feel that we are prepared to do whatever we can to assist in obtaining this settlement, if such is at all possible. We appreciate, however, that we are in your hands and it is for you to write according to the actual atmosphere. The points you raise in connection with damping rings for brakes, clutch springs and clutch spring holders etc., I am contd:- | ||
