ORIGINAL. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to CJ. " " OY. 16th. June, 1918. R9/G16718. 3 RE PLANET BOLTS. X .3168 D To lessen the risk of these being broken, we are fitting a tubular bolt so as to resist the centrifugal force better, and also special nuts with spherical seatings, and end castelllations, the latter so as to lessen the risk of the bolt being over-tightened, and the whole so arranged that in-accuracy of workmanship cannot cause a severe bending stress on the bolt, because we fear at times, in spite of all pre-cautions, a bearing may be so fitted that the end washers clamp the bearing.
