| X.5420. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S E C R E T. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/M4.4.25. I N D I A.{Mr Adams} FRONT AXLE. X.5420. We understand from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} that the pivot which failed is the one which was agreed to be deficient in metal around the lower boss, and therefore it is probable that the one correctly machined which presumably is now being prepared for bumping will shew a much longer life and it may be that it will do all that is required. In view however of this result you will no doubt agree that the machining of the pivot forgings in the bolt recess corner should be held up until we get another result. We have no drawings of the forgings and cannot lay our hands on the pivot of detail drawings but we believe that by modifications to the bolt etc. further strengthening can be obtained on the existing forgings. To be prepared for anything that may happen we have looked into the question of still further strengthening if found necessary, and send you herewith N.sch.1976., giving some suggestions as to how we might get further strength. Probably suggestion (1) is most likely to find approval if it does what is required. You will remember that we do not wish anything to be done with these suggestions until the next bumping result is known. We expect to be in Derby Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning next but in the meanwhile we wish to send you the above suggestions and remarks for you to take any action you think desirable.
