With regard to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}'s wish to use gears having soft splines.; we have run a set of Rolls-Royce gears carefully fitted on new shafts in S.HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} box on the chassis dynamometer. After 10 hours in 3rd. and 2nd. gears and 1 hour on 1st. gear (at 2nd. gear torque) we dismantled the box. Although the gears shewed signs of fidgetting visible by red marks on the shafts, they were still just as good a fit. In spite of the excellence of this result, we are not in agreement with standardising these gears until we have had some road running. As soon as we have completed sufficient mileage on an experimental car to be sure that reversal of torque from drive to overrun does not cause slack we will issue a Standardisation Sheet.
