Copy to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X116b E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}1/HP. 6th May 1936. Messrs. Donald Sessions & Co.Ltd., 906, Harrow Road, Willesden, LONDON.N.W.10. For the attention of Mr Donald Sessions. Dear Sirs, We beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 4th inst. We have examined the sketch showing the modified form of rubber gland, and we shall be pleased to test out a set of rams, so fitted, on one of our experimental cars. As explained to you however on the telephone yesterday, it is not possible to change over on production from the type which we now have until such time as this new design has been proved out and has passed our standardisation tests. The present and very urgent problem, therefore, is to make a real job of the existing design; the fact that some rams do not leak proves that they can be made right. It was noticed that the steel rams on the failed jack (taken away by your Mr Smith) showed no sign of having been "brassed" at the points where the rubber had parted from the metal, and from the existing evidence we formed the impression that a more rigid inspection was necessary during manufacture in order to ensure that good adhesion could be obtained. We are at present carrying out extensive tests on the jacking system on the first 8 production Phantom III chassis, and we will let you know the results | ||
