X.3920 RE 40/50 STEERING BOX SHAFT. --------------------- We send herewith a print of "N" Scheme 679 which shews the development of the proposed strengthened steering box shaft for the existing car, as soon as it can be rbought in. The shaft with the cheeses and nut assembled is shewn on Fig.8, and the existing shaft on Fig.9. both these views being the same as on "N" Scheme 306 and 244. But on Figs. 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 7 we have shewn various shapes for the levers. Fig 1 is the existing lever, and shews that there is a point highly stressed in what is called Section 3. Also, the whole lever is highly stressed. On Fig 2 is shewn the lever proposed on "N" Sch: 306, which it will be seen is very much stronger but which has still a point of high stress where the parallel portion joins the tapering portion. In Fig 3 we shew the proposal to join the parallel and taper portions to a radius. We did not previously appreciate that it was meant to shape out the cheeses in order to get this radius in, but we see that if this is done it makes the construction of the lever very much easier, though of course slightly complicating the manufacture of the cheeses. The lever shewn on Fig 3 is rather stronger than that shewn on Fig 2. Fig 4 is a extension of the idea which makes a very strong lever, but it may be thought to be not desirable, because of the slight corner between the parallel and taper portions, so that in Fig 5 a further adaptation is shewn in which very nearly the same strength is obtained by retaining the radius and taking off the sharp corners of the cheese, which it is thought abe perhaps not of very much use.
