XL5.08 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.8/KT. February 16th 1933. The Crosby Valve & Engineering Co, Ltd, 41 & 42, Foley Street, London. W.1. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 9th inst., referring to six sample thermostats which you recently supplied to our drawing E.80893. We have now repeated our tests and find that the thermostats operate at exactly the same temperatures as we reported to your Mr.Pain. One of them starts to open at 33°C. and is fully open at 42°C. The best one of the six is fully open at 53°C. We are sending you one of the thermostats which we are now using and which gives approximately the required characteristics. When fitting your thermostats in the radiator we experienced some fitting trouble. The holes in the flanges had to be elongated at places. The outside diameter of the inner spindle sometimes had to be reduced, and in one case the spindle was too long initially for us to carry out a test. Your method for sealing off the filling, in some cases causes stickiness at the beginning of the stroke. We are returning the six thermostats, and would like to know if you think you can supply us with suitable thermostats at the price you have quoted. We recently checked six of our present thermostats and the greatest difference in there opening was 1.5°C. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
