B.4. Unit ex 1-B-IV.

Below is a strip report on the condition of B.4 Unit, dismantled following the failure of a balance weight stud after 7,395 miles running in France.

Crankcase & Bearings

Top and bottom halves badly damaged due to balance weight coming adrift.

Main Bearings W/Mt.

No.1. Case half - gritty, otherwise good.
Cap half - "

No.2. Case half - Cracked & signs of breaking up in locally.
Cap half - Cracked & signs of breaking up above dowel hole.

No.3. Case half - Several small cracks and rather rough.
Cap half - Rough & several small cracks near dowel hole.

No.4. Case half - Pitted and gritty.
Cap half - Pitted and gritty.

No.5. Case half - Small portion of metal broken away at dowel hole.
Cap half - Surface pitted and several small cracks round dowel hole.

No.6. Case half - slight scores and surface gritty.
Cap half - Several smallcracks on edge of bearing, at dowel hole section.

No.7. Case half - Gritty.
Cap half - 2 cracks on thrust face.

Crankshaft. EB.39. Test No. A.19. V.C.M.

Slight signs of wear on all journals.
Stud securing No.1. balance weight broken off and balance weight badly damaged.
