Dear Mr.Daniell,

Will you forgive me if I worry you about an old friend of yours, namely the Rudge Whitworth wheel. We have come to the conclusion that it is impossible sufficiently to tighten an R.W. wheel so that the whole of the driving torque is taken on the inner cone and none on the splines. Unless this is so clunks arise on torque reversal. The real trouble seems to be that all the effort of lightening the wheel nut is used on the outer cone even when lubricated, owing to it being a 10° angle.

I thought you would be able to tell us why the 10° is 10° and not say 30°. Obviously, an increase in this angle would enable one to get the wheels on tighter.
