URGENT. U.W Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 48310 BY3/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 1.3.26. RE PROVISION OF FRICTION IN NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I SWING LINK AND BALANCE GEAR. RR. of A, Inc. have written us as follows:- "We have seen a copy of a patent of Mr.Royce's, describing "a means for producing friction on the pivot of the arm "supporting the "T"-shaped equalizer. "We should be very interested to see how it is proposed "to apply this friction on the Phantom gearbox, because "we want to modify such drawings as we have already "made in order to bring them in line with your up to "date ideas. "Would you please send us particulars of this change "at your earliest convenience". We instructed an arrangement based on the patent referred to, in N.Sch.1860. We have produced an arrangement since, G.74427, of which we send you a print. I am of the opinion that there was some difficulty about this scheme, either it did not provide sufficient friction or there was some other defect at the time, because we do not appear to have had it standardized or been asked to incorporate it in our design. I have the idea that you wanted Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} to have an arrangement similar in detail to the 20 HP. which incorporated the powerful compression spring as one of the units to produce the friction.
