Mr. Hives

Dear Sir:

Re Bijur Drive

Mr. Hives has written us (HsX/L.G.4.12.22) asking about the performance of the Bijur pinion, and the maker's recommendations re mounting.

Mr. Platford was gone when this letter came in, but we had, before he left, arranged a meeting here for Mr. Platford with Mr. Lansing of the Bijur Motor Appliance Company, and I believe Mr. Platford has taken back with him a sample pinion representing the best recommended practice of the Bijur Company with the information which we had at the time.

I have now sent the Bijur Company the prints sent by Mr. Hives, together with a summary of his letter, and will forward their reply.

Use on Experimental Car
We showed Mr. Platford the ring gear and Bijur pinion which ran 13,500 miles on 102-CE.

The only troubles with this device were
1 - Originally the motor was wound for too high a speed and the big coil spring was too powerful, causing the motor to slam into engagement with a great noise and causing damage to the ring gear teeth (unhardened steel) though without harming the hardened teeth of the pinion.

2 - We did not allow sufficient clearance between the end of the cylindrical spring-casing and the edge of the flywheel gear. This should be at least 1/8" when new, as there is a tendency as the cork clutch disc wears, for the casing to be screwed further in towards the flywheel, causing it
