To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} x8430 BY/CS5/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}5.5.27. Re Phantom Chassis - Revised Steering Column and Magneto Controls to eliminate "Click-on" type Ball Joints. Sec:5240. The Controls from the Steering column at present on production were only intended to be used temporarily until the West WitteringHenry Royce's home town design to LeC.2200/1 was available. The present "B" Type Connection is still a "Click-on" ball joint, whereas the LeC.design shows a standard type ball joint, also the movements for all types of Controls to the later designs appears to be an improvement over the production Controls. We are still fitting the "Click-on" type of joint on the Magneto Control, although LeC.2198 shows an adaption of the std: ball joint at this place. The above was instructed experimentally by our memo BY/SS{S. Smith}5/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}5.3.26, and we should be pleased to hear if the new Controls are satisfactory and likely to be standardised. If the above "Click-on" joints are eliminated the only remaining ones on the chassis will be those on the Radiator Shutters, which will vanish when the integral Shuttered Radiator is fitted, and also the one on the Carb:Throttle for which, at present, we have no alternative.
