X4021. HOP CT-Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} R.{Sir Henry Royce} (hold-over) Pr.{Percy H. Rose} HP. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DT. EFC. WT. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}1/H26.2.30. X3196 PROGRESS REPORT. F.ENGINE TYPE TEST. ENGINE NO.F.XIV.MS.39. The second 10 hour run on the hangar was completed yesterday. Amount of running to date - 20 hrs. on test bed, 20 hrs. on hangar, total time 40 hrs. Particulars of hangar test and RPM. maintained, similar as first 10 hr. test, see EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/H25.2.30. Last 5 minutes of run at 525 HP.corrected (per boost pressure) revs obtained 2390. Consumptions:- Petrol for last 10 hrs. 249.2 pts. per hr. i.e. .528 pts. per H.P.Hr. Average from start .539 pts. per HP.hr. Oil for last 10 hrs. 5.3 pts. pr hr. Average from start 5.2 pts. per hr. Except for freezing up trouble engine ran remarkably consistently, and there were no failures. Freezing up trouble (?) more evident during the above run. Low temperature and damp atmosphere. RPM.increased 130 by tapping the throttle spindle. Valve springs were found O.K. after above run. Magnetos (Watfords). So far these have run satisfactorily. Inspection of make and break points after each 10 hr.run shows that the gap is slightly reduced. The gaps are re-set to .010" After yesterday's run the gaps were found to be .007 and .009" Slack in the gear. The noise of the gear with the engine running slow on the hangar was particularly good when first put on,but is now getting a little noisier and the amount of slack in the gear appears to be increasing. We have recorded the amount of slack in this gear as taken on the prop. tips, and will note if this increases further. Inspection of the gear after above run shows all bolts to be tight. CONTD:- | ||
