Bailey - Chief Engineer} X336 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}7/KW.21.10.35. SpectreCodename for Phantom III Pistons. Attached is a copy of a report on the endurance running we have carried out on the fully split SpectreCodename for Phantom III pistons with lightened crown. These pistons appear to be of adequate mechanical strength. Up till last week we were under the impression that these pistons were free from knocks, but found that the car in Paris is now suffering from piston taps when warming up and that therefore the pistons require further investigation work. A feature which may have caused the majority of the trouble is that the original fully split pistons were sand-cast and we have never been successful in getting sand-cast pistons to give satisfactory results. We are pushing forward with some die-cast pistons, which may conceivably overcome the trouble.
