Contd.

It is believed that this method of getting the oil away has been tried before at the Works, but it is not remembered with what results.

The fitting of a lower scraper ring would require a serious alteration of the pattern.

(4) It is believed that the pistons as we are running them are ground eccentrically on the skirt. Mr. Royce considers that this might be the means of a lot of oil getting back, and that since the aluminium pistons should be much stiffer then the cast iron ones which give probably by distortion, we might try circular grinding.

This modification can be tried on the existing design.

(5) Baffle Plates. - It is suggested that baffle plates might be fitted in the mouths of the cylinders, such as we used to have to have to collect and drain away excess of oil coming away from the piston ram, which would otherwise be bounced back by the crank. The baffle plates would also blank off the oil spray from the big end.

These baffle plates can be fitted to the existing engine experimentally, merely by changing the cylinder studs.

We are sending you a drawing shewing a ram piston designed as per item (2).

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}

(6) Use plunger operated by pressure in a sylphon tube.
