| 409 15th Sept. 1911 Re Valve Springs. Mr. Swetnam 15-9-11 N10/B15911 - If you have not already gone into this question will you please consider it following points of view:- (1) Increasing the number of turns in our present spring, leaving the dimension of the wire the same. (2) Increasing the diameter of the wire and also increasing the number of turns. The effect of (1) will be to leave the stress when the valve is on its seat the same as at present but will reduce the stress when the valve is lifted. By making use of the 2nd proposal the stress whilst the valve is on its seat may be reduced, at the same time the pressure when the valve is lifted should not be increased.
