Brake Complaints - Phantom lll.

The two outstanding complaints are :-

(1) Servo squeaks.
(2) Hand brake releasing itself when passengers dismount.

The servo lining now used is VM.30.

This was introduced on the first Phantom lll as an improvement as regards 'fade'. We recommend reverting to Ferodo RAD.13 to cure squeaks, both on production and for complaint cases.

The hand brake with increased leverage (standardisation sheet completed 28th April 1937) will reduce the tendency for the hand brake to release itself and is scheduled to reach production in another 8 months' time (101 in D) The leverage is increased from 60-1 to 84-1 and this is equivalent to finer teeth on the ratchet.

In complaint cases it is possible to use lever G.85083 on the hand brake intermediate shaft, with the short travel H.B. lever. The lever is brazed and pegged to the shaft and therefore a new shaft and levers are required. The hand brake will need frequent adjustment.

We do not recommend that this new lever is used unless any customer is insistent that some alteration is made, but we suggest that Works make a few of the new shafts and that Depots obtain some of these for cases of necessity.

In the redesign of Phantom lll brakes, we recommend that the equalizer is supported as in FCD.580 or 583, as in this scheme no geometry errors should occur. It seems desirable for several reasons that the redesign of P.lll
