X.9040 X8040 To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to CJ. BJ. X.9040 X8040 We are sending you a modification shewing a floating piston pin with aluminium plugs. These piston pins and plugs are so easy to make, and fit, and so desirable in many ways, that if they prove satisfactory, they should be pushed forward for this engine at once. We are trying a similar application for Goshawk 111. You now have instructions not to alter the crank-chamber, but fit the lighter piston, and slightly increased length of rod, which will make the engine equal the longer rod engine. It will be remembered that any change in the length of the rods does not affect smoothness, under power (i.e. torque reaction), vibrations, or periods, but only over-running vibrations, which we have dealt with by the more rigid shaft, etc. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
