X.3548. RE "GOSHAWK" MAGNETO DRIVE.

In accordance with Mr. Royce's wishes, would you kindly report as to whether the magneto on the "Goshawk" causes a knock in the driving gear at slow engine sp{Mr Spinney} eeds.

It was Napier experience that the water pump and the magneto cross [handwritten: drive] whether at the front or rear of the engine was noisy, due to the variations in the torque of the magneto and the slack which necessarily occurs in skew gearing. It was found that it could be cured, as one would expect, by applying friction to the magneto drive shaft.

The above has an important bering on the arrangement of the "Vulture" engine which is going forward now.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
