EAC.7. IGNITION HAND CONTROL
AND MAGNETO (WATFORD).

I noticed on the above car that the hand control was not pleasant to handle, and not effective for several small faults, which I should not expect to be repeated in EAC., but two are worth remarking.

The magneto makers seem to go to considerable trouble to make the cam carrying ring (advance control rocker) a tight fit on its diametral fit. This is wrong: both impractical and quite objectionable. It caused the control to go forward in jerks, and we took it off and scraped it a free fit. There is still the friction caused by the spring which holds this part on; this is quite enough considering we have also the return spring to keep it one way. It is absurd that I should repeatedly have to point out these simple things whenever there is any change made.

The other point is more excusable. It suggests that as now fitted up the magneto advance ought to start sooner than the last quarter of the stroke of the control. Probably this is an error. It seems then to advance too quickly. After leaving the vertical tube down the column there is a bell crank double lever on a vertical pin, and one or both of these levers should be longer, to correct the fault and make the lead of the coupling rods better. Probably they are not as drawn by WW. Don't trouble to reply, and perhaps some new setting out will be needed for EAC. 10.
