We consider, on Goshawks, we shall always have a Thermometer fitted. We think that there is reasonable justification to have a thermometer even with thermostat operated shutters, because the thermometer will show us the temperature throughout the whole system, whereas, when a thermometer is used with a thermostat which only short-circuits the radiator, it only gives the temperature of a part of the system. If we retain the thermometer, then we do not consider we should worry about whether the steam can be seen by the driver. It is very doubtful, when the car is going at any speed, whether it would be seen, even if it was led to the outside.

R had a bee in his bonnet - was dead keen to remove the thermometer - when thermostat or thermostatically operated shutters were fitted. He took a much broader & sensible view. A thermometer & warning of high temps foretold silting up etc & attention and cooling still wanted. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}
