We have now concluded a series of tests stiffening the front end of the frame and mounting the hydraulic dampers on the front of the engine. Whilst we have not been able to try out these modifica-tions on 1-WJ, our model car for this fault, the results we have obtained on other cars shew that neither of these altera-tions is likely to prove a complete cure for the trouble if the spare wheels are carried at the rear, and we are not satisfied with any cure that will not deal with these conditions. Therefore, whilst the improvements obtained will be applied to the car about to run 10,000 miles, we are continuing our investigations on body and engine mounting and also on the frame behind that dash-board. We have conducted a large number of experiments on the bumper rig and the attached sheet shews some of the results obtained, though we have not yet completed confirmatory tests on all of them on the road. We have measured on this rig the frequency and amplitude of the axle movement and our results confirm that the frequency is exactly the same as that of the radiator. Nothing we have been able to do to the axle as yet, however, gives us much hope that the trouble can be overcome by design at this point. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Ru. | ||
