1180 11th November 1937 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}7/AP. Messrs Ferodo Ltd., CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH. For the attention of Mr.Longley. Dear Sirs, We have tested R.U. brake linings on several cars. We find in each case that - (1) The lining itself is durable. (2) It does an astonishing amount of damage to the brake drums. (3) It is uncertain as regards squeaks, some cars giving excellent results. One brake on one car has persistently squeaked, and we cannot stop it by changing the drum. It might stop if we relined with another set of R.U. Under the circumstances we cannot use it further, and this therefore finishes the range of Ferodo Linings we have been trying for squeak characteristics. The best results we have obtained from American linings, made by the same Corporation that makes the clutch linings we find so successful. There is no doubt that the Americans are ahead of us in this field. The brake linings we have been trying are the moulded type, which we believe you do not fancy making. We therefore consider that we shall have to import our brake linings, although we have striven to avoid this course. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
