Re Chassis 18.S.IV.

We have received your letter Hg/PeL/RJ 27/11/30.
The time you state for me to return to Derby will make it impossible for me to test out any of the schemes mentioned. The work on the car was begun on Friday and we have up to the time of writing tackled the following:-
Rear Shock Dampers :- We have found the clearance to be .010 on the offside and .007 on the nearside. These have now been made .010. The following features have also been checked. The cross steering tube load was found to be 4.1/8 lbs at 11 inches radii, this has been made standard P.S. 11 1/2 lbs. We found a very bad air leak on the induction pipe the fault of this I will explain later when I return to Derby.
The fan belt we found to be fouling the oil pipe supplying the dynamo drive, this has been altered. The Bifur pipe to rear brake mechanism had broken at the end of the coil where the pipe is taken along the rear spring The Starter Motor has had to be dismantled owing to it slipping very badly when the engine was cold. I have taken the full particulars of the cause of the failure. The Telegauge was hopelessly wrong, we found the red liquid in the pipe line. The cause as far as we can ascertain was due to an air leak at the joint on the petrol tank. The other features I am leaving to be tested whilst I am away.

I am leaving here Monday night and I shall be at the Works on Wednesday.

The front dampers are being attended to.

G.W.H.
