ORIGINAL RECEIVED R3/22.5.28 X3730 X4264 GOSHAWK - DRIVER'S SEAT - "B" STEERING (COMFORT), ALSO SLIGHT IMPROVEMENTS TO "D" DRIVING SEAT. (1) For reasons of simplicity of construction, we arranged the pedal shafts of "B" & "D" to be in the same position. Some time ago we found that to get the full advantage of the length of the chassis, it is necessary for the dimensions to be much finer, and the floorboards and pedals for "B" were modified so as to bend the ankles less and permit the foot to be 1 1/4" forward. This straightens the knee joint and the ankle joint. This modification, owing to the lockout, has not been fitted even to the experimental cars, at any rate not on the limousine about which there has been so much discussion. (This fault was ours.) (2) To render the "B" steering still more comfortable, the following conclusions have been arrived at. If it is necessary to seat the driver in an upright position, he must be on a high seat so that his knees are relatively low, or he must be inclined backwards, otherwise the hip joint is too much bent. For "D" we gave a moderately high seat and a 12° incline backwards; if this was not carried out the driver was seated upright with a rail or hard squabbing high up behind his back. I understand that it has been agreed to raise the seat 1", and also give the 12° lean to the back - this was a coachbuilders fault. (1) together with (2) should make an immense difference. (1) | ||
