2 To Mr. [redacted] from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to [redacted] [redacted] HB.{C. E. Harcombe} X4247 ORIGINAL E2/G25/4/21. RE "GOSHAWK II" GEAR BOX. RECEIVED In reply to the first paragraph of your memo BY12/F21/4/21 re Lec.1349, Mr. Royce says - "The suggestion you make had consideration at the time the design was in hand. One of the bolts needs to be as shewn, on account [redacted] of the ball bear-ing, and they were both made alike for interchangeability." With regard to the latter suggestion in your memo, to produce the gears mentioned closely to size by means of finishing dies to exclude the necessity for machining on the bosses and webs, Mr. Royce says, "yes", and remarks that the surfaces in question are often turned to remove carbonisation.
