COPY. K7370 4704 Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}17/E29.1.34. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hdy.{William Hardy} Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} Re Second Speed Synchromesh. Thanks for Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}8/MJ.23.1.34. I of course realised when I first heard of this backing off of the dogs on the second speed that it would not dispense with the necessity of our having synchromesh second speed as soon as possible, but I should rather like to try a car some time on which this has been done so that I could see what benefit it really does give. Your memo. rather indicates that our programme does not call for the introduction of synchromesh second speed on the 20/25, but as mentioned to you on the telephone last week, this is really covered by the programme accompanying E7/HP.12.12.33 which was written after the last Derby chassis conference. This indicates that it is not going to be possible on the next 100 'S' Series P.II cars, but I hope we shall not have to make any more P.II's without it, and as regards 20/25's whilst it is not going to be possible on the 200 of 'D' series, the schedule in question indicates that with the next series which is to have J.III type frame etc. we shall have the second speed with the J.III separate gearbox. Will E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} please let me know what progress has been made in regard to both and how we now stand. As regards the Bentley, I thoroughly agree that we must not start up a new gearbox for the Bentley, i.e., the Peregrine, without having synchromesh second speed, but it will, as you say, be useful to know what gain can be got out of the Peregrine gearbox on the Bentley chassis.
