CONTROL THE SHOCK ABSORBERS FROM THE DASH—& REGULATE AS YOU DRIVE

THE ANDRE “TELECONTROL” SHOCK ABSORBERS

The introduction of the Andre Tele- or Distant Control represents another important advance toward the solution of the Suspension Problem which, in spite of the attention it has received from Car Manufacturers during the last few years, has not kept pace with the requirements of Modern Cars, though they have in other respects been enormously improved. The general principle of suspension remains fundamentally the same on the majority of cars, and the use of laminated springs which require some method of damping by means of Shock Absorbers to control their action is thus practically universal. Many attempts have been made to produce Shock Absorbers which will automatically compensate for the varying conditions imposed by the Modern Motor Car with its wide range of speed, but so far without success, and in practice a compromise has been accepted which has given fairly satisfactory results.

In order to understand the situation it must be realised that there are a number of varying factors to be considered, for instance, increase of speed within wide limits, great variation of load carried, good and bad road surfaces, different types of springs and varying climatic conditions, etc. Then again the question of shimmy, wheel wobble, body rolling and side sway must be considered and so far it has been found impracticable, if not impossible, to construct a Shock Absorber automatically to fulfil these conditions.

At last, however, a simple solution has been found and the Andre “TELECONTROL” is the result of several years of tests and experiments, and offers the Motorist the means of controlling the suspension system exactly to suit his requirements and to compensate for every varying factor to ensure the maximum comfort and safety under all driving conditions.

The “TELECONTROL,” as its name denotes, is a method of regulating the damping effect of the Shock Absorber from a distance, i.e., by the Motorist at any time whilst actually driving, and the control can be instantly adjusted if desired to suit or meet any particular condition and entirely overcome the difficulties referred to in a very simple and efficient manner.

A separate control for the Front and Rear pairs of Shock Absorbers is provided so that these can be independently set or altered to give either easy riding in town and for normal work, or by a light touch of the fingers altered to suit higher speeds or bad road conditions, and the difficulty of securing a compromise to provide a suspension that is good with a light load or one that holds the car on the road and is comfortable with a full load, is entirely overcome.

It is also easy to obtain a proper balance between the Front and Rear Shock Absorbers to give the maximum riding comfort by means of the independent controls, and should the suspension for any reason become either too harsh or too soft, a touch of the regulator will immediately rectify any trouble in this direction.

DASH CONTROL UNIT.

SECTIONAL VIEW THROUGH SHOCK ABSORBER.

DESCRIPTION. The Andre “Telecontrol” system consists briefly of a Pressure Control Device incorporated in the design of the Shock Absorber, connected by means of a Bowden cable to a neat Dash Hand Regulator operated by the driver to enable the pressure on the friction discs to be varied as desired.
The Control Device is mounted in the centre of the Shock Absorber, and consists of two interior parts, rotatable with one another, in such a manner that when a lever is progressive pressure is exerted on the friction surfaces corresponding to the pull on the lever. The whole of the mechanism for controlling the moving part is mounted on ball bearings, thus eliminating friction, with the result that only a very small effort is required to revolve the moving parts to obtain a range of pressure from practically zero to the maximum required.
The Hand Regulators, one for each pair of Shock Absorbers, are small and neat and may be mounted on the Dash or any other convenient position within easy reach of the driver. Each unit is provided with a hand-wheel which revolves a special nut to which the cables are attached thereby controlling the levers on the Shock Absorbers for regulating the pressure as desired.
The whole “TELECONTROL” outfit is robust in every detail and can be easily fitted by any competent mechanic in a good garage, and will replace any standard Andre or Hartford type Shock Absorber without alteration to the existing brackets or fittings.
The Andre “TELECONTROL” Shock Absorbers have been specially designed and constructed to incorporate the Control Device and embody all the latest detail improvements, and the Duplex type has been adopted as it represents the most efficient model for the purpose.
