so that the plates shall fly out and settle themselves before the final finish to the commutator is done. Such a test would be useful to find out whether the plates were sufficiently tight in the process of manufacture, care being taken not to knock any individual plate down while making the connections.

It will be remembered that larger commutators often take a long time before the plates settle in their final position, at least they did so in the old days, when insufficient heat and pressure were used in their assembly. Kindly avoid history repeating itself.
