We suggest therefore that the 40/50 engine be equipped with the 20/25 type of engagement i.e. Bendix gear with the slipping clutch. There is now in existence a starter motor of the 20/25 type to R.R.Scn.508 which gives a slightly better performance on the main current than the standard 40/50 sequence starter. If a twospeed gear and a Bijur pinion was fitted to this motor we see no reason why this scheme should not be entirely satisfactory for this special Phantom II tank engine.

The main difficulty will probably lie in suitably arranging the flywheel gear rig and Bijur pinion and we understand this will be looked into by the D.O. to ascertain if the above suggestion is feasible.
