Phantom III Rear Shock Absorbers and Rear Roll Rod.

We send herewith N.Sch.4875 showing modifications to the connecting rods, ball pins and spring plates.

The connecting rods are shown made in one piece. We think that this will be preferred by the Works. The outside diameter of the rods is reduced in order, in the case of the offside roll rod connecting rod, to give an increase in the clearance for the hand brake rope. This should prevent a recurrence of damage to the rope such as took place on the last 10,000 miles test.

To meet the objection made to the existing ball pins that they are difficult to remove from the levers we shew a taper of 1 in 4 for the pins instead of the present 1 in 8 and provision for the use of an extractor, a suggestion for which we also show.

The objection we have to the use of a double taper mounting with 45° or 30° tapers on pin and nut, as suggested by the Experimental Department, is that it is more costly than the present design and would necessitate two different kinds of pin, as the lower pins, if of the double taper type, would not, we think, convey the oil to the connecting rod without leakage.

The spring plate is strengthened where stressed most heavily by the shock dampers and roll rod, and bosses are added for a stone guard.

These alterations can be made to the existing die.

N.Sch.4875 herewith.
