BRAKE DRUMS.

I would like to produce a set of brake drums for the Phantom car which shall have a final brinell of 401 to 441. In producing these drums it will be necessary to finish off the brake drums for both front and rear axles, when fitting them to their hubs and reaming the holes before hardening, that is to say the drums should be sent to Mr. Pendlebury for normalising. The whole of the machine work should then be completed, holes etc. reamed with the sole exception that a generous grinding allowance should be left on the braking faces of the drums. I would suggest .025 to .030 per side as being possibly necessary, as it would be impossible to stretch the drums to overcome any distortion which may occur owing to the high brinell figure called for.

When the drums are completed I would like a record of the troubles which have occurred and then they should be handed to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to be fitted to a car for careful comparison with a standard set of drums. One point which would demand special attention would be whether the present co-efficient of friction was maintained under these conditions.
