FOOT BRAKES.

Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Mcr13/L22714.

I thank you for your report on the Foot Brakes.

I shall be glad if you will repeat the same experiment with ferodo or rebestos liners, because as far as my experience goes, there is no permanent distortion with these; at the same time there does not appear to be any permanent distortion with those used by us in France.

The shortcoming of my test there was that the brakes were not used sufficiently to become seriously heated. As far as I can see at present the heating seems to be the great bug-bear of the job, and it also must have been very unsatisfactory in the central brake, which should be tested under these increasingly severe conditions and criticised.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}

The demonstration of the distortion through overheating is excellent and I have been able to explain what actually takes place and how to reduce it. I can so far find nothing against the brake when using ferodo liners, except the excessive expansion which is very bad, but we hope to materially reduce.

Possibly we never had them overheated. This effect of overheating is the real cause of the trouble, I feel sure.
