Valve Springs.

Valve springs made in America of low Carbon wire are now on test. These have already run a considerable time without breaking. We have also been running springs made in England which are alleged to be produced from the same type of wire. One of these has broken. We are getting the English manufacturers to make up springs to the American design in view of the good results we are getting.

Exhaust system

The necessary design work has been completed and detailing is being urged for the much lighter and less costly exhaust system for the Ph.III. It is hoped in five weeks time to be able to tell the Order Office to go ahead on material for the new system. This will mean taking a chance, but we shall have covered a big mileage in France before the system gets into customers' hands. The present pieces are so extravagant that we think it worth taking a risk to get rid of them.

Connecting Rod Bearings.

Solid forged RR.56. bearings are still the most promising though we should want to run them a large mileage before standardising them. Tests on improved Hoyt's whitemetal 11.H. have failed. Z.3. show promise of being slightly better than standard. Tests proceeding.

Tyre Noises.

3.A.Z.38. is being modified, rubber being fitted between axle and springs.

Brakes

We have taken up with the Motor Papers their method of testing. We are satisfied large discrepancies can occur owing to the procedure adopted. On the other hand we do not quarrel with the figures given for R.R.cars., we do quarrel however, with the figures given for our copetitors' cars.

We are considering shewing the Motor Papers how we think brake tests ought to be carried out, so that we may not be penalised in the future. We still think that the Experimental Department ought to have the opportunity of going over any trials car before it is submitted to the 'Autocar' or the 'Motor' as recommended in the last minutes.
