KESTREL SIX CYLINDER UNIT.

GLYCOL COOLED RUNNING.

This engine has made a preliminary run of eight hours non-stop running Glycol cooled with 150°C. Glycol outlet temp.; 2250 R.P.M. 140 H.H.P. At the conclusion of the run the condition of the engine was found to be as follows :-

(1) Cylinder Head. (One-piece).

There were no cracks between the valve seats. The valve seats were all tight and the seatings were in moderately good condition.

(2) Joint Rings.

All the top joint rings were satisfactory. There were no leaks on water test and no signs of any burning or collapse of the rings.

The high temperature rubber joint rings were satisfactory. A very slight leak from one ring was found on water test but this cured itself almost immediately.

(3) Valves.

The S/SLV. sodium cooled exhaust valves had been run throughout on DTD.134 plus 3 fuel for a total of 28 1/2 hrs. The rear valves had a moderate amount of lead deposit on the seats but this was less pronounced on the front valves.

(4) Pistons.

The pistons were run without the extra skirt clearance allowed for high temperature cooling. No.3 piston showed signs of having been tight but the other pistons showed less bedding than usual on the non-thrust side of the skirt.

In addition to this running at 150°C., high temperature running has been carried out previously at 120°C. outlet for 7 hours at 2250 R.P.M. 143 H.H.P. quite successfully.
