Merits and risks of various engine oils and recommending specific types for use.

| Contd. To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -2- possible for us to obtain for our engine, and to recommend to our customers. I have never favoured the use of Price's gas engine oil. It was only suggested I think, by Mr. Platford as a means of obtaining more horse power from the engines, I fear that it would be a risky policy as regards the maintenance of the oil film and consequent absence of wear. I certainly should abandon any idea of using this oil, confining ourselves to using and recommending firstly, "Castrol", Second Price's motorine "C", andthirdly the Vacuum Company's "A"; this latter as a pure mineral oil, in case the vegetable oil tends to greater carbonise within the cylinder. I think, however that the Vacuum Company's mineral oil has insufficient lubricating properties, and should not be recommended by us, until we are sure it is good. As regards the first running of the engines, I agree that the thin oil such as that supplied as Price's gas engine oil, or the Dick's oil could be used with advantage until the engine is cleaned and refitted, when a clean supply of the best and most permanent oil could be put in prior. to delivery.
