Experimental Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}15/JH. 23th February, 1937. H.S.Burn Esq. (Personal). The Imperial Tobacco Co., Bristol. Dear Sir, We thank you for your letter of the 18th instant together with the booklet on the "Cross Rotary Valve". This type of valve is very interesting and from the description appears to possess some remarkable advantages. From our point of view however as makers of multi cylinder engines the Rotary valve has one outstanding setback, this being the driving mechanism of the valve. Any chains or gears are undesirable on account of noise which is so important in our chassis, our biggest problem at the moment being the quietening of timing gears. We should be pleased to see both you and Mr.Cross to have a talk on the subject, any afternoon from 2 p.m. being suitable if you will let us know in advance and the day you intend to make your visit. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
