RE WEAKNESSES IN OUR STEERING GEAR.
In view of the present trouble we are having on test with the above it would appear that we are not taking sufficient precautions in the manufacture to ensure our cars being sufficiently safe as regards this point.
In the ordinary course of test I am afraid the above is not sufficiently tested to enable us to absolutely guarantee that all the steering connections and levers are sound and in absolutely safe condition, and I would suggest that at least every steering part should be put through some straining test before being fitted to the chassis, to test that same does not break or take any permanent set. The strain should be such that the steering connecting tube should collapse first.
The particulars of the test could be as-certained from particulars given in my sheet EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}30/T22312.
This sheet must be filed with the correspondence to which it refers.
