We have got over the trouble caused by oil and water leaks. Aluminium brake drums are now running on the front and rear of 4.B.30. Wider aluminium brake drums and combined front hub and drum in aluminium are in progress of manufacture and should be completed within a month.

Clutch.
No further trouble with trunnion races since elongating the cages. We have had 4 clutch pressure plates crack on B.80 engines and this we consider to be due to fitting of a light clutch pressure spring and consequent clutch slip. A set of stronger springs has been fitted to 4.B.30 and further mileage will prove the point.

Propellor shaft.
Nothing further has been done about this. Vibration is passable but will require further attention immediately after the war.

Water Pumps.
Total mileage run on our latest type water pumps is as follows;-
Total mileage
9.B.V. 8,021
3.B.30. 10,473 } 32,211
30.G.VII. 13,917

It appears that we have made a step forward in curing pump troubles on high power engines.

Rattles in Transmission.
We are having no troubles over transmission rattles with the centre plate friction disc set at 17/27 Lbs/Ft.

Rear Axles.
We have had no trouble with axle failures throughout 401,362 miles, other than a failure on 30.G.VII after 70,000 miles. The simplified thrust bearing which consists of a plain roller bearing instead of a pre-loaded taper roller bearing has run 33,418 miles on 9.B.V and 12,423 on 30.G.VII. Both are still running.

Tyres.
We are not yet happy about AVON tyres, particularly with regard to squeal on corners. The Avon people however are submitting modified designs for test. A check on tyre life is being run on 12.B.V car, 1 Avon tyre and 1 Dunlop tyre being fitted to each front wheel.
